On-Site Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Maintenance Services
Long-term habitat maintenance, monitoring support and practical BNG management for developers, landowners and management companies across Kent.
On-Site BNG Maintenance
On-site Biodiversity Net Gain habitats need to be managed for the long term, not just created and left alone. Once habitats are secured through a planning condition, Section 106 agreement or Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan, they need the right maintenance, monitoring and practical management to stay on track.
Biodiversity & Habitat Solutions, working alongside our sister company J N Gardening Limited, provides on-site BNG maintenance for developers, landowners and management companies across Kent.
Our experience comes from practical habitat creation and long-term management. Together, we have helped design, plan and create a major BNG habitat bank in Kent, including a mosaic of grassland, scrub, hedgerows, ponds and woodland habitats. This gives us a clear understanding of how BNG habitats need to be established, maintained and monitored over time.
Our role is to help protect the value of your on-site BNG habitats, support compliance with the agreed management plan, and reduce the risk of costly remedial work if monitoring targets are not met.

What Our On-Site BNG Maintenance Service Includes
On-site BNG maintenance involves managing habitats created or enhanced as part of a development, usually over a minimum 30-year period. The work should follow the agreed Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan and support the long-term biodiversity outcomes required by planning.
As part of our service, we can:
- carry out soft landscape and BNG condition audits
- maintain habitats in line with the agreed management plan
- support progress towards completion certificates and monitoring milestones
- liaise with appointed ecologists, Local Planning Authority ecologists and management companies
- help interpret monitoring reports and condition assessment requirements
- identify issues early, before they become expensive remediation problems
- provide practical habitat management across grassland, hedgerows, scrub, trees and wetland features
This gives developers and management companies a practical partner who understands both the compliance requirements and the physical work needed on site.

What Does On-Site BNG Maintenance Involve?
Legal agreements and planning obligations
Significant on-site biodiversity enhancements are usually secured for at least 30 years. This may be through planning conditions, Section 106 agreements or conservation covenants. These agreements set out how the habitat must be created, managed and monitored over time.
Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan
The Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan sets out the practical management and monitoring requirements for the site. It explains what habitats need to be created or enhanced, how they should be maintained, and how progress will be assessed.
Developer and management company responsibilities
Developers and management companies are responsible for making sure on-site BNG habitats are properly managed and retained for the required period. Without regular maintenance and monitoring, habitats can fail to meet their agreed condition targets.
Monitoring, reporting and remediation
Monitoring is used to check whether the habitat is developing as expected. In many cases, this includes regular surveys in the early years, followed by further checks at agreed intervals over the full management period.
If the habitat does not meet the required condition, remedial work may be needed. Good maintenance helps identify risks early and keeps the site aligned with its agreed BNG obligations.
