Our habitat bank at Chalksole Farm is actively working to restore vital ecosystems for one of the UK's fastest declining bird species - the Turtle Dove.
Once numbering around 150,000 breeding pairs in the 1970s, their population has plummeted to just 2000 today. Habitat loss and food scarcity has pushed this iconic bird to the brink. With around 700 pairs still found in Kent, the region remains a stronghold for their survival.
However, targeted habitat creation through Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) offers the chance to reverse this. We are planting native woodlands, enhancing mature hedgerows, adding kilometres of new hedgerow, and creating fresh water sources - all of this supporting their nesting, feeding and hydration needs.
If your development project affects biodiversity, choosing off-site BNG units from a provider like Biodiversity and Habitat Solutions helps you:
Each unit is secured under a Section 106 agreement, and our team manages everything — from initial planting to habitat maturity and compliance reporting.
Whether you're a developer, ecologist, planning consultant or interested party, your project can play a meaningful role in wildlife recovery. By investing in our BNG units, you're supporting real, measurable environmental change — including the return of the Turtle Dove to the South East.
